COSMOS

In his new artist book COSMOS, Gabor Palotai visualizes outer space as an inner space: Every person is their own planet, and each planet has its own genetic coding. The images in COSMOS are set in clear-cut circles with intensive patterns of white, black and orange. These patterns evoke an abstract art not only of planets, but also of galaxies, moons, and stars. Every image in the book invites you to explore the outer space extended into your inner life. COSMOS is a book of contemplation, and as such it opens up for imagination.

Maximizing the Audience

A retrospective of Gábor Palotai's design projects 1985–2000. The secret of happiness is to be in harmony with yourself; little more is permitted or desirable. Seek your environment and adapt it: do not ask me what is ‘yourself’—I know only vaguely what I have made from Self into myself.

ZOO

In his latest book ZOO, Gábor Palotai displays a different take on the depictions of animals as figurative illustrations; by now every animal (one of them is you) is portrayed as an abstract art; sharply outlined in contrast with a mesmerizing pattern in light and dark. The effects of this white and black pattern enhance the impression that each animal is etched into the paper in a texture that evokes tactile sensibility. At the same glance each animal looks bound to the architectural outer shape of their image, their bodies are tattooed in undecipherable graphic patterns suggesting that each of them is free from within to multiply and literally take on any figurative meaning.

Statement by the jury
The illustrations of the animals convince with their completely different form of what we are used to seeing. Firstly, the reduced colouring in just black and white causes the viewer to look closer. Secondly, the particular pattern with its etching effect triggers curiosity. And finally, the simplicity of the illustrations is surprising. That sometimes less is needed to tell more strikingly comes true here in a genuinely playful and creative manner.
