CAROUSCHKAS Ö
Capturing instances of calm on the island, through the lens of the camera. Forming and
accounting for what it is that entices, that inspires my choice to live alone on a deserted
island in the outer reaches of the Stockholm Archipelago. A methodical, determined
documentation of material. The material that I use and that inspires my free creativity
and gives rise to my impulse to tame the harshness and transform it into a new
aesthetics, liberated of function. During one year I took photographic images on
the island and using scissors or a scalpel, I would cut and mount them with wallpaper
glue on ivory cardboard in given sizes. The book is my time chronicle. A few brief
moments from one woman’s life, on a real-life deserted island. An isolated spot, a
sparsely vege-tated rock that rose from the sea as the glaciers retreated. An island
with no running water, no electricity, no neighbours, nothing. Just the thought activity
of the brain, the body’s euphoric alliance with the day, and the light of night. A part
of life, with the sea as my untiled washroom. My armour-plated insight.
