Fashionwashing summarize the act of making anything into something is not. We have reached the stage of fashion design without design and fashion without fashion.
Modern, postmodern and shopmodern notions of fashion are outlined within the time frame 1850–2025. Spanning from the modernistic belief of fashion as a strict symbolic system, via the liberal joy of the postmodern abundance of codes, to our shopmodern financialization and fashionalization of life. The fashion aesthetic is on repeat mode, making fashion capitalism incapable of voicing a worldview beyond its own repetitive visuality ready-to-monetize. Fashion realizes itself with your body as raw material. The only identities fashion creates are its own recognizable shop-and-go looks. Hence, you can never create your identity with fashion. Contrariwise, fashion nips any attempt to break free in the bud.
The fashion gaze decodes values, only to recode them into visual prejudices. "Look like this," urges the moral of fashion. Put in practice, the fashion judgement invades our Lebensraum. Objects of knowledge have become commercial goods. The word itself has become a cheerleader in the labyrinths of shopping. A candy floss of images is spun over the reality of things. The brutal exploitation of humans and the environment is driven away by a wind of goods.
